Things to do in New Delhi, India
New Delhi
The ancient city of Delhi in northerly India is modern India’s capital – a huge, sprawling city of chaos and calm that incorporates ancient relics and Mughal tombs, the planned modern city of New Delhi and the jostling streets of Old Delhi. In short, a fascinating bundle of life and history that is at once intoxicating and troubling. Welcome to Delhi…
New Delhi
The administrative and political centre of Delhi is today housed around the area of New Delhi- a new “city” built under the British Raj and built in the early 20th century.
It was designed by the great empirical architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.
It is centred around a central thoroughfare called the Rajpath. This connects a couple of important symbols of what was once the centre of British India and now the modern state – the beautiful and striking domed home of the President of India in the Rashtrapati Bhavan at one end and the famous India Arch further down. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is flanked on either side by the Secretariat buildings, which house the great offices of the Indian state. The buildings offer grandeur and are fine examples of buildings using classic Indian designs with aspects of colonial architecture.
Lined with parks and fine houses the area is a breath of fresh air in Delhi. Many national celebrations take place in and around New Delhi such as Independence Day.
Not far from here is Connaught Place – the home of many up market shops, bars and restaurants, hotels and markets which constitute an important commercial heart to the modern part of the capital.
