Iguazu Falls
Iguazu Falls
The Iguazu Falls are one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls. They straddle the border between Argentina and Brazil (and are close to Paraguay too) and prove to be an exhilarating spectacle for the thousands of visitors who visit them each year.
Iguazu Falls
The falls spring out of an area of rich, rainforest vegetation through which the Iguazu river flows. At a u-bend in the river the falls begin, spanning 2.7km around the curve of the width of the river. There are 270 different falls in all, dropping onto little islands, at different heights with one main body of the falls called Devil’s Throat- which has water pouring down it from three sides.
For visitors, this is all awe inspiring stuff, as the waters continually pound the rocks beneath with mesmerising flows. The best viewing is generally from the Brazillian side of things, with a peninsula of land which brings you out almost under the falls, jutting out under the water. There are platforms built around the site for viewing purposes too, helping to bring visitors closer to the action.
What stands the Iguazu Falls out from other notable waterfalls like Niagara and The Victoria Falls is its relatively open nature spanning the river meaning almost three quarters of it can be viewed at one time in one go from beneath it, as it were, with water coming down all around you.
This envelopment, plus the wilderness which surrounds the site, is a great part of the appeal and enduring enchantment of the falls. For anyone with an interest in the natural wonders of the world in South America this is a good way to start.
